What do you dream about?

One question, asked during a doctoral research interview with a Fortune 100 executive, opened a moment of real human connection. In this TEDx talk, Dr. Dan Docherty shows how intentional curiosity moves people from protective fear to aspirational connection.

Why this talk lands

Dan opens with the research. Seven in ten people at work are not fully engaged. Poor communication is estimated to cost organizations $1.2 trillion. We have more technology than at any point in history, and we are arguably more disconnected than ever. This is not a nice-to-have. We are in a relational crisis.

His answer is a simple idea he calls the Dream Leader: someone who can dream, and who can also interpret the dreams of the people they serve. It starts with a single question, asked with genuine curiosity.

Inside the talk

Four moments that change the room.

In under 13 minutes, Dan moves from one interview to the science of human connection.

1

One question changed the interview

On a 2015 doctoral assignment, Dan had one hour to keep a Fortune 100 CHRO in a positive emotional state. He asked, “What do you dream about?” She turned to the window and said, “I don’t know the last time anybody has ever asked me that.”

2

We are in a relational crisis

Disengagement at work, communication breakdowns, and a phone that disconnects us from the people we are supposed to be talking to. The tools to connect have never been better, and the connection has never been thinner.

3

The science of being seen

When hope, care, and empathy enter a room, the parasympathetic nervous system engages. Oxytocin builds trust, heart rate and blood pressure come down, and people become more creative problem solvers.

4

Seeing people in the valleys

Drawing on his years playing Joseph on stage, Dan asks whether we see people in their lowest moments, not just on the mountaintops, and choose to interpret their dreams.

“

My question is, can you see others for who they dream to be?

The challenge

Ask it. Wait. Listen.

Dan closes the talk with a simple practice anyone can start this week.

Ask it

Ask someone “What do you dream about?” and mean it. Curiosity is what moves a conversation from the task to the person.

Wait

Let the silence do its work. The answer that matters often comes after the pause.

Listen

Hear what matters to them, not to you. That is where trust and a shared vision begin.
